Energy

Energy work represents a significant area of work for Brick Court Chambers, and we are recognised as one of the leading sets for major disputes in this field, whether in litigation or arbitration (and before a wide range of international and domestic tribunals). Many members of Chambers are regularly instructed in a wide variety of energy-related disputes, including oil and gas sale agreements, oil and gas production and transportation contracts, mining, joint venture agreements, and energy taxes such as petroleum revenue tax.

Several members of Chambers are currently extensively involved in a variety of different multi-billion dollar proceedings involving Russian energy companies resulting from the break-up of the Soviet Union. Separate teams from Chambers are also representing the two main defendants in the litigation arising from the Buncefield oil explosion. Members of Chambers have also been involved in various arbitrations concerning damage to oil refineries following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and have been successful in a dispute concerning option agreements in relation to a power station. At present, two members of Chambers are also heavily involved in a $50 million claim for breach of contract relating to oil concessions in the Yemen.

Recent cases of note include:

  • Colourquest v Total & Chevron (Buncefield explosion) (Commercial Court)
  • British Energy v Credit Suisse (Court of Appeal)
  • Masri v Consolidated Contractors (Court of Appeal)
