Colin West

Colin's practice extends to commercial and European law, including insurance and reinsurance, conflicts (English law and EC aspects), competition law, EC law (e.g. free movement, commercial agents) shipping, carriage of goods, and general commercial law. The majority of Colin's practice involves proceedings before the High Court in London, and on appeal from that Court, although he has also appeared in proceedings before the European Commission in Brussels, the European Court in Luxembourg and in arbitrations both in London and Bermuda.

Important recent cases in which he has been involved include the Buncefield litigation, which involved claims between various oil companies arising out of the explosion at the Buncefield oil terminal; Masri, which concerned the continuing jurisdiction of the English court after judgment in English proceedings; The Accident Group and Composite cases, which involved professional negligence group litigation brought by the insurer of a legal expenses insurance scheme against solicitors who accepted cases under the scheme; the Viking Lines case, concerning the applicability of the EC Treaty free movement rights to collective agreements and threats of strike action; and the Apostolides case, concerning the enforceability in England of judgments from the courts of Cyprus concerning the ownership of land in occupied northern Cyprus.
