Marie Demetriou
Marie Demetriou is recommended in the principal legal directories as a leading junior in EU/Competition Law and in Public Law where she is described as "a great force to have on your side for all public and EU matters". She has extensive advocacy experience before both the English and European Courts.
Her EU/Competition Law practice is diverse spanning areas such as free movement (Hunting Ban, Viking Line), conflict of laws (Apostolides), citizenship and asylum (Saeedi, W(China)), intellectual property (Premier League/Satellite Decoders), aviation (IATA), pharmaceuticals, taxation and social security. Marie has been instructed in many leading competition and regulatory cases including several ongoing cartel damages claims (National Grid, Cooper Tyre, Nokia and air freight), the Pay TV and the construction bid rigging appeals in the CAT, Courage v Crehan, BSkyB/ Virgin Media, Barclays Plc v Competition Commission and the Mobile Termination Charges telecommunications appeal.
In Public Law and Human Rights, Marie's significant cases include PMOI (CFI, successfully overturning the PMOI's designation as a terrorist organisation), R(Countryside Alliance) v AG (HL), Timbrell v Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (CA). She is a member of the Attorney General's 'A' Panel and of the Treasury Solicitor's Freedom of Information Panel.
Marie has an insider's knowledge of how the ECJ works, having worked there as référendaire to Judge Edward between 1999 and 2001, and is co-author with David Anderson QC of References to the European Court (Sweet & Maxwell, 2nd ed). She is Visiting Fellow of the Centre for European Law, King's College London.
