Cambridge University obtains final injunction against protestors

29/07/25

Following a hearing in the High Court on 23 July 2025, Mr Justice Butcher has granted the University an injunction against “Persons Unknown” with the effect of, amongst other things, prohibiting, until July 2026, protestors from disrupting graduation ceremonies due to take place at The Senate House.

Four graduation ceremonies over the last year have been disrupted or prevented from taking place at The Senate House, following encampments and other direct action by an organisation called Cambridge for Palestine. On three of these occasions, the University has had to move the graduation ceremonies to other locations. Last month, the protestors encamped on an area of lawn next to Senate House Yard, known as Chestnut Tree Lawn, and sought to disrupt a graduation ceremony where Stormzy was obtaining an honorary doctorate for law.

Recognising the harm to the University and graduating students (and their guests) caused by this disruption, Butcher J granted summary judgment in favour of the University. This follows interim relief granted by Fordham J in February 2025 and Soole J in March 2025.

The case was reported on BBC News.
