David Anderson QC interviewed on the future of surveillance

06/10/15

David Anderson QC featured on BBC 1’s Panorama programme last night, which was built around an interview with Edward Snowden in Moscow and also had comment from ex-CIA chief General Michael Hayden.

David answered questions from veteran journalist Peter Taylor about bulk interception, judicial authorisation of warrants and the duties of social media companies, before summarising the influence of Edward Snowden for good and for ill.  He drew on material contained in his report A Question of Trust, laid before Parliament in June 2015, which he wrote with the assistance of Tim Johnston and Jennifer McLeod.  The report is expected to influence the Government’s new Investigatory Powers Bill, which will be issued in draft during the next few weeks.
