​The trial opened in January 2023. Mark Howard, of Brick Court Chambers and the lead lawyer for Nigeria, told a story about “a dishonest and venal cabal” who used “repeated lies” to pursue “riches beyond the dreams of avarice.” In Howard’s telling, Quinn and Cahill were scam artists who totally lacked the ability to construct a $500 million gas facility, but pretended otherwise in order to deceive the government of Nigeria. Then, when Nigeria backed out of the unfavorable deal, they tried to shake it down in arbitration​
