Mark Howard QC, instructed by Freshfields, led a team to success in one of the largest ICSID arbitrations heard in Washington and Paris during the course of 2009 and 2010. The case, said to be worth $10.1bn, related to alleged seizure of an Energy Company, Libananco, owned by the notorious Uzan family.
In addition to the ICSID action Mark Howard QC represented the Republic of Turkey before the ECHR in Strasbourg in another limb of the dispute where the company sought relief under Articles 1, 6 and 13 of the convention. The court found the applications of Mr Kemal Uzan inadmissible.
