Maya Lester in 6 sanctions cases in the Luxembourg courts

28/04/11

Maya Lester is currently instructed in a large number of cases challenging asset freezing measures imposed by the United Nations and / or European Union. Most of these cases raise issues about rights of defence, the legal basis of these measures, and the relationship between UN Security Council resolutions and "autonomous" EU measures.

Her pending cases currently include Kadi (2) (anti-terrorist measures) and Tay Za (Burmese sanctions) in the European Court of Justice, and IRISL (Iran), Rautenbach (Zimbabwe) and El Materi (Tunisia) in the General Court of the European Union.

She has given a number of talks on this subject (including this year to the Bar European Group and the Human Rights Lawyers Association).
