Panellists:

Professor Vernon Bogdanor, research professor at the Centre for British Politics and Government. He was formerly Professor of Government at Oxford University, and Senior Tutor and Vice-Principal at Brasenose College. He has written widely on government and politics, has been an adviser to government and parliamentary bodies on many occasions, and in 1998 was awarded the CBE for services to constitutional history. He is a Fellow of the British Academy.

Professor Kate O’Regan, Professor of Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford and inaugural Director of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. Prior to joining the Oxford law faculty, Professor O’Regan served as a Judge of the South African Constitutional Court for fifteen years. Since her term at the South African Constitutional Court ended in 2009,  she has amongst other things served as an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court of Namibia and as a member of the boards or advisory bodies of many NGOs working in the fields of democracy, the rule of law, human rights and equality.

The Rt Hon Baroness Scotland QC, the Commonwealth Secretary General. Baroness Scotland was the first black woman to be appointed Queen’s Counsel and, at the age of 35, the youngest woman ever to take silk. As well as holding ministerial office in the Foreign Office, Home Office and Lord Chancellor’s Department, she served as HM Attorney General from July 2007 to May 2010, the first woman to hold that position.

The Rt Hon Lord Sumption, joint head of Brick Court Chambers until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2012. Following his retirement, he has spoken and written widely on the relationship between the judiciary and politics, including in his 2019 Reith Lectures and in his books, Trials of the State: Law and the Decline of Politics (2019) and Law in a Time of Crisis (2021).
