Freshfields fails to dismiss million-pound claim against its client JP Morgan

10/10/19

The Lawyer, 10/10/2019

JPMorgan argued that the case should be dismissed as it had received enough approval from Nigerian authorities before allowing the transfer of funds from a government account to those controlled by former oil minister Dan Etete, who controlled Malabu Oil and Gas until he was convicted of money laundering in 2007. The payments aimed to end a multiyear battle over the ownership of an oil licence that has placed Royal Dutch Shell and Eni at the centre of corruption investigations in Milan. RPC partners Tom Hibbert and Jonathan Cray instructed Brick Court's Roger Masefield QC, Richard Blakeley and Ben Woolgar for Nigeria. Freshfields partner Sarah Parkes instructed Fountain Court's Rosalind Phelps QC and David Murray for JP Morgan.
