CAS decides on UEFA multi-club ownership regulations

11/08/25

On 11 August 2025 the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Prof Luigi Fumagalli, Mr Manfred Nan, Mr Olivier Carrard) dismissed an appeal by Crystal Palace FC against UEFA’s decision of 11 July 2025 to remove Crystal Palace from the 2025/26 Europa League because of a breach of UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations. Nottingham Forest and Olympique Lyonnais were parties to the appeal because their own places in the Europa League were at stake.

After an expedited written procedure, evidence and oral submissions were advanced at a 10-hour hearing in Lausanne on 8 August 2025. The Panel found that John Textor had shares in both Crystal Palace and Olympique Lyonnais, and was a Board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the relevant time. The Panel also dismissed claims by  Crystal Palace that they had received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and Olympique Lyonnais. The UEFA Regulations were held to be clear and not to provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date.

The CAS press release is here. Unless parties request confidentiality, a full Award (with grounds) will be made available on the CAS website in due course.

Lord Anderson KBE KC represented UEFA in the written and oral stages of the appeal.

Marie Demetriou KC and Alastair Richardson were instructed by Wiggin LLP.
