ECJ reduces level of fines requested by Commission from Ireland for environmental law infringements

21/01/13

In two recent judgments, the ECJ reduced, by millions of euro, the level of fines and penalty payment that the Commission sought from Ireland in relation to failures to comply with previous ECJ judgments concerning the environment, taking into account inter alia Ireland's reduced ability to pay in view of the current economic circumstances. These are the first such sanctions that have been imposed upon Ireland.

The judgment is here.
