High Court grants injunction against Sheffield bin strikers

18/06/25

For almost a year, Unite members working for Veolia in Sheffield have been on strike. Since April 2025, 20-30 individuals have begun taking direct action against Veolia, in particular by preventing refuse collection vehicles from leaving their depots during the morning. As well as severely disrupting Veolia’s operations, it has also led to substantial numbers of Sheffield residents not having their bins collected. Consequently, Veolia sought an injunction prohibiting this unlawful conduct, arguing that this was a proportionate interference with the strikers’ Article 10 (freedom of expression) and Article 11 (freedom of assembly) ECHR rights.

Following a hearing last week, Mrs Justice Stacey has granted an injunction against Persons Unknown until December 2025, prohibiting them from: (1) trespassing on Veolia’s land; and, (2) blocking or obstructing vehicles from entering or exiting Veolia’s land.
